What is the difference between AWD and 4WD vehicles? Here is a brief overview of the unique differences and uses of AWD and 4WD SUVs.

4WD

AWD

4-Wheel Drive vehicles have been around longer than AWD vehicles. The technology is a little older, but still effective. These vehicles have a lever or selector that allows the driver to move between 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. These vehicles are best designed for deep snow or other rugged off-road terrains. 4WD systems are heavier and get poor MPG on the highway.

All-Wheel Drive technology is more recent than 4WD. If a vehicle has an AWD drivetrain that means that all 4 wheels can receive power from the motor at all times. The AWD system determines what wheels should receive power to increase speed, maneuverability and efficiency. This system is on at all times and requires no input from the driver.

4MOTION®

Experience AWD on the new 2016 Tiguan. The 2016 Tiguan is available with with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION® all-wheel drive. 4MOTION® is an option on all 2016 Tiguan trim levels. Like most AWD systems, it is designed to transfer torque between the front and rear wheels. This gives the driver more control over the road from behind the wheel.
